PhD research involved instrumental investigation of infants acquiring the Nigerian language Yoruba, focussing on their perception of lexical tone. A comparison of their development with that of English-acquiring subjects allowed investigation of some theory-internal phonological predictions.

Subsequent research has also sought to link cross-linguistic comparisons to theoretical issues. A year teaching in Atlanta GA (2000-2001) was partly spent investigating one aspect of a local dialect, resulting in the publication of a new paper in Language Sciences.

Forensic phonetics is an additional interest and he has been employed in this context on numerous occasions by the UK police, the legal profession, and the press.
